Basic Crochet Stitches

Here you can learn how to work a single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), triple crochet (tr), and extended triple crochet (extr).

Single Crochet

To work a single crochet, insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over (yo) and pull up a loop. You should have two loops on the hook. Yo and pull through both loops on hook

Half Double Crochet

To work a half double crochet, yo, insert hook into the next stitch, yo and pull up a loop. You should have three loops on the hook.  Yo and pull through all three loops on hook.

Double Crochet

To work a double crochet, start in the same way as a half double crochet… yo, insert hook into next stitch, yo and pull up a loop. You should have three loops on the hook. Yo and pull through two loops on hook, you should have two loops left, yo and pull through the remaining two loops on the hook (these last two steps would commonly been written as “yo and pull through two loops twice”).

Triple Crochet

To work a triple crochet, yo twice, insert hook into next stitch, yo and pull up a loop. You should have four loops on the hook.  Yo and pull through two loops on hook three times.

Extended Triple Crochet

To work an extended triple crochet, start in the same was as for a triple crochet… yo twice, insert hook into next stitch, yo and pull up a loop. You should have four loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through one loop on the hook. You should still have four loops on the hook. Yo and pull through two loops on hook three times.

These stitches are some of the most commonly used crochet stitches (though I admit the extended triple crochet is less common). They provide a variety in stitch height which will affect how the crochet fabric feels and acts, but if you’re looking for something more fancy you will have to learn some more advanced decorative stitches.
