About The Designer

Hello! My name is Mary and I am the designer, crafter, marketer, webmaster, salesperson, videographer, photographer… (you get the idea) for Kickin Crochet. I grew up in Kent, Washington. I have a bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. I’ve since lived in Connecticut, New Mexico, Utah, North Carolina, and Oregon before returning to Washington state. In North Carolina I finished two years of a PhD program in pharmacology. Research and I didn’t get along very well so I quit to stay home with the kids and started up Kickin Crochet.

My Mother taught me the basics of crochet when I was fairly young but I didn’t really get into it until I was pregnant with my first child. I made a baby blanket for my daughter then started making headbands and hair clips and trying to sell them at local baby boutiques. I didn’t have a lot of success. I opened my etsy shop in 2011 but sold almost nothing. Finally I decided that patterns are the way to go. I was already coming up with my own designs for the items I was selling so I started taking explanatory photos while I crocheted and writing up the patterns to sell as PDFs. I’m always learning new stitches and techniques and it’s a lot of fun (but also a lot of work) to design new patterns. Because patterns take so much creative energy and I have a small brood of children to manage, I do tend to work in spurts so forgive me if I don’t have anything new for a month, but ten things the next month!
